As a footnote to this discussion, engineers do often design a multiple-pole filter by cascading filter blocks -- and yes, these sections are generally not identical. Given the desired overall response, a filter design program figures the number of second-order blocks needed and the f and Q for each -- sometimes a first-order section as well.
